efs-provisioner-controller pod running as privileged root user

The pod is running with root access?
Is this necessary for proper functionality?
What can we do to run the pod in non privileged mode and not any of the functionalities that are working for us?
Issues go stale after 90d of inactivity.
Mark the issue as fresh with /remove-lifecycle stale.
Stale issues rot after an additional 30d of inactivity and eventually close.
