Hello,
Please put on the download page (latofonts.com/lato-free-fonts) also OTF version with psautohint.
(on Windows without smoothing, autohinted OTF version of the font at small sizes looks much better than the autohinted TTF version (ttfautohint is absolutely useless without anti-aliasing), for example:
