Xorg: No input / freeze

I tried booting some of the images (actually tried the xfce + i3 one) from USB but X is either freezing or input isn't working at all - hard to tell as as soon as the session is started I cant do anything anymore - not use the mouse, the keyboard nor changing to another tty.

Unfortunately I cannot view the X log as I have no chance of interacting with the system at all.

This was tried on 3 different systems, all with the same phenomena: A normal standalone pc, an old EEPP and a thinkpad t460.
