I'm planning to move to Wayland at some point. Does this tool work there? Is support planned/possible?

With root privileges, you could probably use ydotool and a substitute for xsel to get texpander to work. This will require some efforts, though.

According to this thread, you could create a setup involving the compose key.
If you give up on Texpander automatically pasting the text, you can also modify texpander.sh to call wl-copy. Let me know you'd like to see how I did it.
