As Reflex can be used as row based or column based, would it not make sense to rename col to item, which is a more generic term free from direction connotation?

Given the forthcoming changes in version 2, I think this comment will no longer be relevant. I'm dramatically changing the behavior of the grid. It should be released shortly.
