[Docos] Add FAQ entry for laptops with Nvidia Prime

Opened this issue · 4 comments

I'm using lutris v0.5.12 with nvidia prime render offload(I have a laptop). Game doesn't open when I enable Virtual Desktop option, I can play without enabling that option. Wine version that I'm using is lutris-GE-Proton7-35-x86_64, OS: Fedora 37.

Other than that, guide is really nice. I installed the mods myself but game was lagging really hard. Enabling Hardware Vertex Shading fixed my issue. Thanks for the great guide and hard work!

Edit: It is an issue with prime render offload option. If you disable it, Windowed(Virtual Desktop) option will work, however you will play with integrated graphics card.

Thanks so much for the kind words! Likewise, I'm so sorry that you stumbled headlong into a horrible Nvidia Prime issue. I myself now avoid Nvidia (AKA "Plague on Linux"). Of course, that doesn't exactly help you or others in similar situations.

Kudos to you for also installing the mods yourself manually! Extremely impressive. That's some fierce dedication to the JRPG cause, right there. 😮

Wut We Goin' Do Now Is...

Let's add a new FAQ entry. What would your wise advice for other Nvidia Prime users be, @br34kp0int? Specifically, should everybody either:

  • Disable Prime Render Offload? Is the integrated GPU fast enough to run the older Trails games? I assume so, because they run on literal potatoes. What was your performance like?
  • Disable Windowed (Virtual Desktop)? I had bad luck running the older Trails games without a windowed virtual desktop, but maybe something has changed since then. Did you manage to get the game running without a windowed virtual desktop?

I would advice you to Disable Prime Render Offload. You can disable it under the system options tab. Uncheck "Enable NVIDIA Prime Render Offload" and that's it. Now you don't have to disable Windowed(Virtual Desktop) option.

The reason that I'm advicing you to disable nvidia is, firstly, Trails games work well on potatoes as you said. Also, if you Enable Nvidia and Disable Windowed(Virtual Desktop), you can run the game, however the alt+tab does not work properly and sometimes the game crashes because of this. I use alt+tab to check the game guide and I assume there are many people who use the guide while playing the game.

Superb! Thanks a bundle of quartz for your super advice. I'll write up a new FAQ entry this weekend plagiarizing inspired by your wise commentary. You dah Trails MVP, @br34kp0int. 🥂

I am nodding. Trails games are literally unplayable to me without a guide; you miss so much content that you're really only playing ~50-60% of the full experience. Windowed mode forevah!

Oh – and I recently completed a fully working GOG installer for Trails in the Sky SC, which I am currently playing for the first time. SC is a thing of beauty, sadness, and madness. Why you break my heart repeatedly like this, Trails? 😭

I haven't publicly documented that installer yet. Thankfully, it (basically) follows the exact same instructions as our Trails in the Sky FC installer. When the time comes for you to head into a dark pit of despair, please lemme know if everything installs as expected for you. Until then, may Estelle Bright be your constant companion through the fierce corridors of life.

Oh, I actually installed the FC again via your installer. I know Trails games but it's actually my first time to play it and I was just at the beginning of the game. So I decided to install again with your installer. It works ✨ perfectly ✨. Thanks again so much. I will definitely use the SC installer in the future, but for now it's the time to dive into the FC.
