Pressure sensitive buttons

I'm playing Star Ocean 3 right now, it's been running pretty good overall. However I have hit a wall! There is a puzzle that requires use of the PS2's pressure sensitive buttons. I cannot figure out how to get past this. My understanding is that I have to be able to lightly or firmly press one of the face buttons. But it always reads the input as either light or firm. I can't get it to do the other one.

Is there some way I can emulate a "soft" or "firm" press of a button via another key? For example, press my Q key to do a light press and my W key to do a firm press. I see rumblings around the internet that this may be possible with older versions of PCSX2 or some third party utilities.
