I'm running with composer version 1 (version 2 had failed faster), Ubuntu 20,mariadb (Ver 15.1 Distrib 10.3.25-MariaDB) and php 7.4

Pleas try the last version 3.0.9.1 which uses composer 2, which is really more memory efficient
PHP 7.4 is required. It won't work with PHP 8, 8.1.

Just run:
composer create-project linnovate/openideal-composer openideal
