An ill-adviced user name can make log in impossible.

I apologize if this is not the right way to report a problem with the LMDE installer, but here goes:

The issue: If the users name contains an apostrophe, the installer will not throw a warning, but go ahead and complete the installation. However, once installed it is impossible to log in as that user (or indeed root). No hints or warnings are thrown to alert the user.

Note This issue relates to users actual name (as in first name and surname) -- not the username for log in.

To reproduce the problem:

  • Run a fresh installation of LMDE and during the installation process, in the window "User account" enter a name with an apostrophe (e.g "Søren O'Neill") in the text entry field "Your name".
  • Note that no warning is thrown by the installer
  • Finish installation and try to login

The special character 'ø' is apparently not a problem, but the apostrophe is.
