[Feature request] Display grid pattern

One feature I miss in xed that is present in gedit is the grid pattern.
It can be activated in gedit in Preferences > View > Display grid pattern.

I know it's a totally cosmetic request. And I don't know if it's something laborious to implement. But it's something I appreciate a lot.
