License clarification

Closed this issue · 1 comments

I was told on the Make Human forums to open an issue here regarding this problem http://www.makehumancommunity.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=18928

From what I learned from Thomas' Word Press and the Make Human forum, the rigs/content that you get with the MHX2 importer are licensed as CC0 and the plugin itself is licensed under GPL. However, when you download the plugin, the zip file contains a license with only the GPL part about the plugin mentioned, and no mention of the license for the rigs/content and nothing shows up when you click on "License" part inside the Blender mhx panel.

GPL is viral and makes people paranoid that it might infect the output too, which is why both Blender and Make Human clarify about their output separately and that clarification is bundled with the program. Here's an example of Blenders license exception that's located in their folder:

  1. Grant of License

Subject to the provisions of the GNU GPL license, BF grants You a
non-exclusive right to use the Software at any computer You own or use.
Artwork you create with the Software - whether it is images, movies,
exported 3d files or the .blend files themselves - is your sole
property, and can be licensed or sold under any conditions you prefer.

Would it be possible to add an additional section to the license in the file, or a separate license text file clarifying the CC0 license for the rigs for future users to make it more accessible and in case the website ever goes down? It's cool to have clarifications like these bundled so the users don't have to go digging about what they can or can't do on forums etc.

This is the part from Thomas wordpress that's missing

Extra content added by the MHX2 importer, in particular the various rigs, is released under is released under Creative Commons CC0. You can copy, modify, distribute and perform the work, even for commercial purposes, all without asking permission.
