I really like the current approach of adding facets when clicked, and then making clear they can be removed by clicking (x).

Perhaps making clearer the current facets applied with text along the line of "You are currently viewing:..." might help (and looking where you can display facets by their name rather than codes - e.g. looking at Liberia rather than 'country code=LR')

Agreed. Needs to be tidied up and putting facets into English would be a good idea :)

So for example
You're currently viewing activities in [recipient country] being implemented by [implementing org] and with a current implementation status of [implementation status]
