How is it that in this Browserscope http://jsperf.com/regexp-vs-indexof/25 Firefox 14 Firefox 18 is more powerful? Perhaps it affects the CPU used by the client?

I'm not sure. You can always try making the test more complicated if you suspect something to be too good to be true it probably is.
