Custom variables

Is there a possibility to track custom variables without events in matomo visits logs. For each custom variable I am tracking one event is created in visits log. Also when i look in the option Behavior-->Page titles in Matomo portal i see one page with title "Page name not defined". That page is corresponding to the custom variable I created.

There is no API to submit them without either a page view or an event.
