The what's new page has gotten huge. A toc at the top would be hugely valuable with maybe a sublevel.

This didn't make the cut for the 1.2.0 release, but I will put it on the 1.2.x branch and use that to post the website docs anyway.

Just as a reminder, the version number of matplotlib (from __init__.py 's __version__) is repeated in the built html's title.
