How does this compare to the work done by Janis Elsts at w-shadow.com with Plugin Update Checker Library?
Note that Janis also handles WP 2.8+ and WP 3.0+ by hooking both the transient_update_plugins event as well as the site_transient_update_plugins event.

@volomike I do not have time to compare it, sorry. It just works for me and I made it publicly available and free.
The idea is to hook on requests to http://api.wordpress.org/plugins/update-check/1.0/
