Solution: Chat view is not visible

If you can't see the Chat View, please follow these steps before reporting a problem:

Got the latest versions?
Install the latest Visual Studio Code: Command: > Code: Check for Updates.
Install the latest GitHub Copilot Chat extension: Command: > Extensions: Update All Extensions.

Does your Copilot release/pre-release choice match your VS Code stable/insiders channel?

We recommend to only install Copilot extension pre-release in VS Code Insiders, otherwise it can happen that Chat doesn't start as it occasionally needs the latest Insider as minimum version.

Is Copilot Chat is enabled for your current account?
Command: > Output: Show Output Channels... > GitHub Copilot Chat. Look for copilot token chat_enabled being true.

Logged in with the right GitHub account?
Your GitHub account that is signed into VS Code must have an active Copilot subscription (check your subscription).

If you use Copilot through a Business subscription, is Chat enabled?
Make sure your org as Copilot enabled with your admin (see https://github.blog/2023-07-20-github-copilot-chat-beta-now-available-for-every-organization/#enterprise-admins).

Also, check that VS Code has the right org access in your Application settings: Open "GitHub for VS Code" and see Organization access.

Did the Chat panel get lost in a hidden VS Code UI?
Focus it using the command > Chat: Focus on GitHub Copilot View and drag it into your preferred sidebar.

Open the secondary sidebar with the titlebar controls:

Lastly, try signing out and in again in VS Code
This will solve rare issues of outdated auth tokens. Sign out via the Accounts menu, restart and sign in again. Copilot will ask for authentication.

I hope you find this useful. If the problem persists, please submit a new issue with the relevant logs attached.

  • Command > Developer: Set Log Level...
  • To the right of Trace, click the double check mark button. ✔️ ✔️ (enables trace logging as the default)
  • Restart vscode
  • Open the Output pane (ctrl/cmd+shift+u)
  • File an issue the contents of the following:
    • Github Authentication Output channel
    • GitHub Copilot Output channel
    • GitHub Copilot Chat Output channel

When you wanna turn trace logging off you can:

  • Open the Command Palette
  • Run the Developer: Set Log Level... command
  • To the right of Info, click the double check mark button. ✔️ ✔️

This was my case: #438

I've gone through all the suggested steps and the chat icon is still not visible. I've created a new ticket with the logs attached but it's been closed without anyone asking. Here it is for reference #449

Not sure if this is the problem you're all facing. But I was on stack overflow for a while looking for why the chat wasn't in my activity bar for a while.

For me the issue was resolved by changing the chat Icon to 'enabled' from 'disabled'

This resulted in the chat appearing in activity bar

Tried this:

Output: Show Output Channels... > GitHub Copilot Chat

Resulted in:

2023-10-12T19:17:44.530Z [INFO] [auth] Logged in as xxxx
2023-10-12T19:17:45.815Z [INFO] [chat] copilot token chat_enabled: false
2023-10-12T19:17:45.817Z [INFO] [auth] Got Copilot token for xxxx

So, false, what should I do now? I got copilot working fine, via my organisation. So why is not chat enabled?

It's sorted out now! My organisation admin hadn't enabled chat for me 😆

I (and others in my org) had the same issue; fixed after leaving all other organisations other than my employer (who is paying for copilot). This has been a common issue for us. Apparently has something to do with being a part of other organisations which do not allow/enable copilot.

Opened my laptop today and this is how Copilot Pro is displaying. Updated VSCode Insiders and rebooted. Still the same.
