Powerline does not distinguish recursive editing

How to reproduce:
(require 'powerline)
(powerline-default-theme)followed by M-x recursive-edit. At this point, Emacs is in a recursive editor but there are no visual clues to indicate this. This makes it really hard to tell when you're in a edebug session.
