Is it possible to change the font used to show the current directory or the running command in a tab?

No. Changing the font will affect everything including text in the tabs.

FYI, it is now possible to choose different font styles, i.e. italic, bold, underline etc. for different elements of the tabbar. If different fonts are configured for those styles, those fonts will be used. Changing the fonts affects child tabs as well of course.
