coupling between init script name and PID logic in server_loop

The init script and server_loop each take their own path to deciding how the PID file should be named, and things break if they don't agree. Particularly brittle since the init script uses its own filename to determine this.

Not sure yet about the best way to fix this but it needs changin'. (And then remove the warning from the README.)
