Pagination can't go back past page 2

When on the top page of the site, and you click next page at the bottom, you are taken to page 2. When you click previous, it does not take you back to your top page with the most recent posts. Going from page 3 to page 2 works though.
It looks like the code to check for this is present in included index.html though. When I clone this repo, add enough posts for a new page, I get the same issue.
