Question: enable1Pin & enable2Pin

Hi
Coule you please explain what enable1Pin and enable2Pin are?
I really don't understand

The L298N has two pins sometimes called "Enable1" and "Enable2" and sometimes called "EnableA" and "EnableB". When a pin is high, the associated motor has power supplied to it and when low, power is removed. Typically a PWM signal is applied here to control the speed.

Oh, I have not payed attention to them because they were with jumpers like on the pic:
