node-red-node-email does not trigger catch node when connection fails

Which node are you reporting an issue on?
node-red-node-email v.1.18.0
What are the steps to reproduce?
Place a node-red-node-email on flow along with a catch node. Use expired/incorrect password
What happens?
Node says connect error, but catch is not triggered
What do you expect to happen?
catch node should be triggered to handle exception
