Format specification?

Tecplot ASCII files (.dat) are already supported by Meshio, and binary .slz files is a closed format. However, the legacy binary format .plt is open, and would be useful for me (and probably, at some point, others in my department). The PyTecplot library can read all of these formats, but require a licensed version of Tec360 which PyTecplot connects to in order to do the conversion.
