Exercise asset license and sources

Hi,
I'm the developer of Feeel, also a FOSS workout app released under the GPL v3.
One of the things that I've struggled with is getting quality visuals for each exercise.
The exercise animations in your app are top-notch! Are they released under an open-source license? Are their sources available anywhere?
I would not only love to potentially tweak and use them in my app, but they would also be very useful for open-source projects like wger, a FOSS database of workouts and more, and even for more general projects like Wikimedia Commons. In the end, it'd be great to have a central database of workouts with accompanying animations that any FOSS project could make use of.
I also think that the visuals are pretty awesome. May I ask how they were created ? Is there a blender template scene that can be used to create new ones ?
@12people I agree that a central database of workout would be awesome, not only for the visuals but also for the information about it, what mistakes not to make, muscles trained, et c

Great to hear that your project is still active. Last time I had checked your old GitHub page it seemed inactive. I am using the 3d model and some animations by Maximo. Unfortunately, the license from Adobe prohibits the redistribution of the source files but everybody can create their own animation. The rendered file can be redistribute even in commercial products. For them I am going to define soon a CC license.
In the end the rendered files can be used but I can't publish the source files but I wrote a tiny tutorial in the openWorkout wiki.
I would definitely like to have some FOSS workout database out there, that would be much easier. Thanks for the hint with wger, that's project looks interesting.
@koalp
see the openWorkout wiki. A template of the scene in Blender is available.

The project is semi-active. It's a hobby project and I haven't at all been finding the time to work on it. The biggest problem for the project is a lack of exercises, especially exercise illustrations, which are currently quite time-intensive to produce at a quality I'd be satisfied with. Glad to hear that you know about the project, though. :)
Too bad about the Mixamo license. Have you considered using a FOSS rig instead, such as Blender's professional–grade Rain 2.0 rig? I know it's just one gender, but it would make it possible for all source files to be shared among the FOSS community, which would be great if more and more exercises were being created.
Actually, if you have experience with creating these animations in Blender, what would you think about running a crowdfunding campaign to create these FOSS animations? I'd be more than happy to contribute, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this.
As for Wger, the project has been dormant for quite a while, but got active again quite recently. Seems like one of the changes they're looking at now is updating the database structure. If you'd be interested in potentially using data from Wger, it might be worth looking at their current API and seeing if you could have a use for it or if it might be more useful to you if certain improvements were made.

If I had found out that your project was still alive, I would haven't started openWorkout. Also you did some improvements that I was missing in your last versions. Your idea with vector meshing of a real life photo is quite good (also avoids any license problems) and not so time intensive as to generate a short video. Maybe that's a better solution.

Sure I considered using a FOSS rig but I am not a 3d expert and using the Maximo rigs and animations was the easiest way to have some nice animations.

I have only beginner experience with Blender just watched 2-3 youtube video tutorials by BornCG. That's it!
I agree it would be good if we have some FOSS 3d model expert enthusiast that have time and fun to generate such videos.

Might be good for the central workout database idea. My goal is to have something like the Anki idea to a have community that's creating trainings and share it with the community. Without an active community the project will be someday dead.
Hi there, I'm the main developer of wger and I am obviously also interested in getting more images. As 12people said, we're changing some of the exercise structure so among other things it is easier to translate. If you want to use the data, there's a REST API and if there's something we can do to make it easier for you, just ping us :)
