Weird splitting behavior under rare circumstances

Under rare conditions, complex splitting actions result in incorrect splitting. To reproduce from a clean start:

  • Ctrl+N (new document)
  • Ctrl+Shift+H (split horizontally)
  • Ctrl+Shift+[ (go back to left panel)
  • Ctrl+N (a second new document)
  • Ctrl+Shift+V (split vertically) ← Here the split works, but the focus doesn't shift down to the lower panel
  • Ctrl+N (a second new document)
  • Ctrl+Shift+V (split vertically).

The result is messy:
