Thanks for the PR, but this repo is only a result of downloading the Google samples, so making any fundamental changes to the code here isn't meaningful IMO. If you don't mind, you could check if the relevant example has been updated on the Google website and ping me and I'll recreate the examples, or then you might report the issue on Google's trackers/forums.

Thanks for the response, I checked in chrome developer site the downloadable ZIP file is also using the old api which won't work. is there someone I could contact for fixing the source in zip file ?

Unfortunately I'm not aware of which email list, bug tracker or google discussion that is the relevant one for the chrome extensions, so I don't have a good idea of where to report issues like this.

There's a discussion group here, but it doesn't seem to be monitored by the correct Google devs: https://groups.google.com/a/chromium.org/forum/#!forum/chromium-extensions -- alternatively there's a support form: https://support.google.com/chrome_webstore/contact/developer_support -- neither seems to be completely correct for similar issues...
