Is the publishing of new container versions automatically triggered by new Pandoc releases? Or is it manual.
Is help needed? Is there a showstopper in the new version or its dependencies?

The publishing step is currently manual. See the Case: new pandoc release section in release-checklist.md. The first few steps for this can be done by anyone, and PRs are always welcome.
I was AFK for some days and currently playing catch-up. New images for the 3.3 release are on my list and can be expected within the next days.
