Change boot order from linux

Is there a way to change the boot order from a linux system.
For example, if I want to boot from USB instead of SSD once, to make a backup of the SSD to the stick (with dd).
It would be very helpful because, in case of a broken system after update, I got my backup and would be able to flash it back to the SSD. And I could do so, without the need of taking a RS232-cable.
Thanks for your help ;-)
