android icon and slpash screen missing / not working with phonegap build

steps to reproduce:
git clone https://github.com/phonegap/phonegap-app-star-track
cd phonegap-app-star-track/
phonegap remote build android
...then scan the QR code from the https://build.phonegap.com website and install the app (tested on android 5.0).
also changing <preference name="phonegap-version" value="cli-6.1.0" /> to the current <preference name="phonegap-version" value="cli-6.5.0" /> did not help
