consider project rename for debian packaging

Hello Pablo,

I am looking at packaging this software for inclusion into debian and ubuntu.

One thing that comes to mind is that "messaging" is a very generic term, and doesn't really help users determine whether they would want this package installed on their systems or not.

Is there any chance you'd consider a different name that gives an indication that this module is to be used for SMS/MMS type things? As an example, here are the names of other python packages that already exist in debian/ubuntu:

http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/628062/

If you want to keep this name, that is fine, and it will not hinder inclusion by debian; but it is something to think about.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks!

Hi @achiang thanks for considering python-messaging for its inclusion in Debian/Ubuntu. I'm not 100% satisfied with the name either, but it's the better I came up with! At that time pysms was taken already, so is python-mms. Also the project does SMS and MMS, and we're considering doing some WAP too, so what should it be named? python-messaging is generic enough I think. I took the inspiration of the most successful project related to images in python, PIL, which on ubuntu/debian is called python-imaging as you can see in your list. Taking all I mentioned into account don't you think python-messaging is an appropriate trade-off? I'm open to suggestions, but

  • coming with an appropriate name is hard for the reasons I mentioned
  • there's already a project with a similar generic name
  • changing the name is a "marketing" nightmare that I don't feel like doing unless there's a really compelling reason

Hi Pablo,

I agree with you, and think python-messaging is a fine name.

Thanks.

Ok sound :)
