Mapnik problem

Hi, I'm a french beginner on python and github. Sorry if my knowledge is limited, but I got a problem running the code.
When I stard mapbook.py or run_macbook.py I got an error
import mapnik as mapnik
ImportError: No module named mapnik
I downloaded Mapnik manually, but the error persist.
I think I missed a step, can you help me ?
