Command to Execute environmental variable fails

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. connect the ssh
2. execute the command "echo $XXX_HOME" to read environmental variable
3. there is no result in sysout variable.
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
value of environmental variable
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
