State of ansi2html maintenance

My impression is ansi2html can safely be called dead due to lack of maintenance. It CI setup never run on py37, py38 or the recent py39.

I know for sure that py38+ chokes with SyntaxError and that there were multiple attempts (PRs, bugs) to prevent this from happening.

My impression that the failure to relax its licensing has a contribution to this as several authors avoided using the library as a dependency due to its viral nature.

What can we do to address current issues?

  • Do we have an alternative we can recommend others to switch to?
  • Can we enlarge the number of cores in order to perform some minimal maintenance on it? Like fixing syntax errors, making new release and enabling CI for newer versions of python? -- this should allow it to survive few more years instead of forcing users to look for alternatives.

@ralphbean How about moving the plugin under a generic github organization umbrella so we can have multiple users that can maintain it? I do have https://github.com/pycontribs in mind? -- I would be more than happy if you would join it as it sole purpose is to ease long-term maintenance of python projects and over the the years it did adopt lots of projects.

It fixed! Now i am one of the maintainers,...
