Can minimalmodbus read unsigned char type result?

Thank you for this amazing tool.
I'm using it on my testing a module with modbus ascii.
The module returns its address in unsigned char type.
I wonder if minimalmodbus can get it right? I tried read_string, read_register, read_float. none of these works.

Could anyone give any idea please?

Do you have some example response? Do you know, where the value is? (input registers, holding registers, ...)
