iMac G3 (non slot loading) with DB-15 connector instead of VGA

Closed this issue · 7 comments

Hey, I'm wanting to do this with my older, first generation iMac, but it has a two-row DB-15 connector. Still 15 pins like VGA, but with a different layout. Are the same numbered pins the same, or is there a separate pinout diagram for the DB-15 connector?

Actually some more quick research led me to this!

It hopefully is the right pinout, and everything here should work since there are corresponding pins, just not the same numbers

Hi,
Is your G3 a tray loader? If it is, then this mod can't be done to it, the slot loader and the tray loader are just too different on the inside...
Unfortunately I don't have a tray loader to mod myself so I can't really confirm much about how to mod it. That said, I have talked with a couple of people that have modded a slot loader and it turns out it's a bit easier to do.

Good luck.

No, it's not a slot loader, however, I was under the impression that the iMac being referred to in this documentation was a slot loader.

For example, the very first line in the readme:

Add custom boards to an iMac G3 DV(slot loader) in order to use it as a monitor without having to destroy it.

Does this not refer to a slot loading G3 if it says that?

Sorry that was a typo on my part... I'm still having my coffee. I meant to say if your's is a tray loader.

Ahh Gotcha. Honestly, I'm going a very different route with what I'm actually doing, but the pinout diagram and most of the video connector stuff would definitely work and this stuff is hugely helpful. Thanks!

Eventually I plan on getting a tray loader and I'll definitely document what I do with it just like I did for the slot loader.
Please share whatever it is you end up doing because I think there is still quite a bit to learn about the tray loader.

Good luck!
