Change .get_coords

For my project it would be really helpful if the coordinates of a were not stored in the same element of the array. If the nodal coordinates were stored in separate elements manipulating my keyfiles would be easier.

What do you mean by separate elements? Nodal coordinates are stored in the respective node. Also can you give a small use-case example? Please note that this project is majorly maintained for bugfixes only.
