Since firefox and chrome have built-in "tab discarding" when the browser begins using too much memory, wouldn't this extension be redundant? As i use it i noticed the extension is more reliable in reducing cpu usage as it discards tabs more often, but i would just like to know whether the purpose of the extension is to just provide control over built-in tab discarding, or to act as a replacement for it.

It augments it.
Firefox's Tab Unloading only enters into action when the memory is low.
