Can't get a meterpreter session with metasploit development environment

Hi there!

I just finished setting up a a metasploit development environment on my Kali machine, meticulously following the instructions on http://r-7.co/MSF-DEV. Everything seems OK, but I can't get any meterpreter sessions.
I use msfvenom to create a meterpreter stager and start an appropriate handler, but meterpreter never connects.
When I perform the same procedure with the original metasploit distribution that comes with Kali, it works like charm.

I verified that I use both msfconsole and msfvenom from the development environment.
Any ideas?
