Improve error messages

Introduction

I'm currently working on a voluntary project at weekends, and I want to spend my time sorting problems for the charity I work with. Unfortunately the error messages are uninsightful, and often provide unhelpful references to compiled code.

Details

It seems to me that Errror messages should provide clear calls to action, and point to the problem in the Users code or their dependencies, rather gobbledigook compiled code.

Discussion points

Do we agree that the error messages are not good enough, or is there some configuration that needs to be better documented.
