Split downloads

Currently when enabling the higher quality codecs you might receive a file with (currently) limited ability to playback.
Proposed change
Enable an option to in addition to the higher quality file also download the standard widely supported files, preferably to a separate directory.
Personal workaround
I use two instances of Libation to download the higher quality files to a separate library for a day they will be more widely supported.
Excellent software, really appreciate it!
@Merkapt We're not going to do this. Niche features like this are far more trouble to get right than they're worth because:
- It's hard to explain to users what the feature actually is. Sure, you get it because you want it. But most other people won't understand it, or they will expect it to do something different than it was designed for and open more bug reports even though it's working as intended.
- Users who would benefit from something like this feature probably wouldn't want it to work exactly the way you want it to work, which means making it configurable, which means more obscure and difficult-to-explain options.
- There's already a reasonably effective way of achieving something like this, which I go through below.
There are many existing tools within libation to re-download your books manually or in batches. One way is to use the Visible Books menu.
- Visible Books menu > Set book 'Downloaded' status manually
- Set the drop-down menu "Not downloaded" and click "Save".
- Re-liberate all books
Also, you can separate books by codec using the folder naming templates. For example, use this Folder naming template:
<codec>/<title short> [<id>]
That will separate all books into different folders based on the codec name (e.g. AAC-LC, xHE-AAC, MP3, E-AC-3, and AC-4)
But I think it's a good idea to add the last downloaded audio format info (last downloaded audio file codec name, bitrate and sample rate) to the search engine so you can find books downloaded using the newer codecs and re-download them if you choose. Note that the "Last Downloaded" info (displayed in the "Last Downloaded" column of the display grid (hidden by default)) is changed every time you download the book. So if you first download a book in xHE-LLC, then you re-download it as AAC-LC, the "Last Updated" column will show AAC-LC.
@rmcrackan Congratulations on 1,000 issues closed!
I agree with @Mbucari . This isn't a bad idea, but it's far too nuanced to ever be able to include. The current work-arounds, while kinda tedious, are understandable to those to whom it applies.
