Documentation Clarification - msysGit or Git for Windows
Closed this issue · 5 comments
In the main installation documentation https://github.com/rpavlik/git-windows-mintty#readme
it is not clear whether the pre-requisite git installation is 'Git for Windows' or 'msysGit' - http://msysgit.github.com/.
It seems to work OK with msysGit - so I wonder if the install documentation could be updated to reflect that.
Thank you.
Is Git for Windows not the same as msysgit?
@tamlyn the two are related but not identical. Git for Windows is the end-user distribution ("what you need to use Git"), msysGit is the development environment (msys + Git + stuff to build it).
The distinction has been confusing people forever, but the msysgit people seem to want to stick to it.
What part do I mention msysgit? I do mention msys, but I think out of necessity since it's the msys version of mintty. I tried to be careful to refer only to git for windows.
I think the confusion was because you used to have to go to msysgit.googlecode.com for downloads.
@rpavlik IMO the readme is clear and unambiguous about it :) so you might be right and it could just be the url that confused @rjattrill
OK. Sounds good. Support request resolved :D.
