Why Img save is needed to show Img in Preview area? Can we directly show the bitmap in Preview area? why compression like .PNG needed for storing bitmap as a file

For reducing the latency in image previewing, Can we show bitmap directly in preview area? And, purpose of doing compression(.PNG) for storing bitmap as a file?
