Definition should be expanded to include "word salad".

Not all salads contain edible food, or, indeed, physical matter.

I contend that at least words are intended for human consumption. Perhaps a salad ought to be "anything a human can safely consume in some manner".

This is an entirely reasonable take. Salad Theory's intent is to address food categorization, not to be a taxonomy of all phenomena, but if we were to analyze our definitions beyond the realm of foodstuffs, I believe you would be correct.

Does this definition entail some amount of ableism, though? Take the pitiful lactose intolerant individual, for whom a caesar salad cannot safely be consumed. We've already determined caesar salad to be salad. Is the lactose intolerant individual, therefore, not human?
