add standardJS linting

We should add basic standardJS linting as the only test script (for now)
This might make a nice first task for a new contributor - just comment if you want to take this one
There will be a bunch of warnings/errors to fixup when doing this, and we can help guide someone through it. It will also be a nice whirlwind tour of beautiful modern JS syntax and style :)
