Cicada logo original picture

I'm not a Photoshop wizard, but I think this matches: https://www.sciencephoto.com/media/135640/view

I personally think that its in reverse & that this picture is based on the cicada one. Is there any proof that this picture is around since 2012 or before?

this picture is based on the cicada one

While possible, currently the 2 options are:

A.

B.

  • this is the original photo and the Cicada logo is a filtered version

Is there any proof that this picture is around since 2012 or before?

I just stumbled upon it yesterday, and don't really have the time right now to dig into it, but as the owner of the photo is known it sounds fairly easy to find out.

Edit:
The EXIF of the pic on the photographer's webpage (http://www.goetgheluck.com/Tosena-splendida--Cigale_4218_51_42_RGP_2.html or directly http://www.goetgheluck.com/goetgheluck_imagettes/51/400_4218.jpg) says:

Date Time Original: 24. Apr. 2008 at 16:12:32

400_4218

Even if you can't dig in that deep, it's a fairly nice research done here!
But wouldn't go that far to state it as a fact yet

@cicada-solvers
Do you know if this was already spotted? I tried to scroll back in the "Artwork" Discord room, but could not find it there, and I do not have a Discord account (yet?)...
Does it seem legit?

How does this help?
Probably it doesn't at all (like #12 or the dead oak tree), but this can be only known after looking at it (like all dead ends).
Most probably they are just "interesting details".

What makes me think this is THE cicada?
As it was pointed out on Cicadamania (https://www.cicadamania.com/cicadas/cicada-3301-cicada-compared-to-distantalna-splendida/) the shape and wing pattern points toward "Distantalna splendida formerly Tosena splendida".
While there are many distantalna splendida images on the web, the insect used for the logo has a few distinct features:

  • the symmetric, pronounced "hammer head"
  • symmetric body
  • almost no legs visible except a tiny bit at the lower right part of the body
  • the wing angle (Apparently (after looking at a lot of photos) insect preparators prefer a smaller wing angle (I guess for the more "epic" look), but the logo image has a near-180° wind angle.)

(Not to mention the fact that that laying the 2 pictures over each other in Gimp shows a very close match.)

Hello,
based on this picture
cicada

I tried to reproduce the logo.
here is my recreation :

I think it is another proof that you're right

Hello there!
First of all thanks for your effords.
Do you mind sharing the process of how you did this?

Sure !
I used Gimp, playing with brightness-contrast then filter neon. The Logo that is used for the comparison is the Splash from the CicadaOS ( thx @Tweqz ). On the "CicadaSolvers" discord, It has been seen that it is a bit different from the original one.
But it may be another topic.
