Changed directory location to my old NV dropbox folder, which deleted my notes

Opened this issue · 2 comments

A few months ago I downloaded the new nv application, and just now I wanted to back my files up to dropbox like I did with the last version of the app. So I set the folder I had been using for the old app as my new read/write location, and suddenly all my notes were gone, replaced by my notes from the older version of the app. Is there any way to restore/recover my notes?

There are two files in the dropbox that have been recently modified: Interim Note Changes and Notes & Settings, but I'm not sure if they are from the old app or the new one. How can I load them up and check? Please help!

Just because you can’t see your old notes doesn’t mean they’re deleted. Just change your notes folder back to the original location at /Users/YourUserName/Library/Notational Data. You can read the wiki pages if you don’t know how to get to your user Library folder.

Thank you so much for the reply.

I think that when I was using the old NV app, I may have moved the folder from my Library to a dropbox folder, maybe thinking that that was the most efficient way to have the files instantly saved to the cloud. The reason I say this is because there is currently no Notational Data folder in my Library folder.

Additionally, it seems like I still have access to the 'link' files from the old app, but I guess they are encrypted? They're not readable, and the file name looks like this: .0131104-551950671-1

I figured all I would need to do is find where the files were stored, but I don't see a Notational Data folder anywhere, and am wondering if this is a result of having both apps at the same time. Any idea where the folder could be hiding? When I search Notational Data, the only thing that comes up is the Dropbox folder with all my old files.

Thanks again.
