iconv and format detection fixes not merged to "3" branch

before we can release version 3, we need to merge in fixes from #9 and #10

Fixes merged.

However, when running the tests I'm getting a lot of [unix_utils] "xyz file" does not exist or is not readable on the local filesystem.

Have you encountered this before or have any suggestions for fixing it? As far as I know, all required unix utils are available in my path.
