New $version parameter not doing anything

Hey,
I saw the appreciated new version 1.2 with the $version parameter and wanted to test it out but the new parameter is not doing anything yet in version 1.2.[0-2], because the repo for example is still hard coded to version 4.0.
Question is if this is intended ? I was looking through some commits and merges and saw the needed changes in one merge and shortly after that some reverts were made to roll them back again, on the first look it looks like maybe something got mixed up somewhere and the needed new code is just not in the release as it should have been ? But maybe I am missing something :)
