Learning a flow vs. learning a sampling grid

The appearance flow network from https://arxiv.org/abs/1605.03557 learns a flow then adds it to an identity grid to have a sampling grid as shown in this code.

This work on the other hand is learning a sampling grid directly as opposed to a flow as seen in this code.

Any reason why an identity grid is not utilized?
